Softgel contract manufacturing: a complete guide for brands

Softgels are one of the most popular dietary supplement formats — and for good reason. This guide explains what softgel contract manufacturing involves, the main softgel types, and how to choose a partner.

Softgel contract manufacturing: a complete guide for brands

What is softgel contract manufacturing?

Softgel contract manufacturing is the outsourced production of soft gelatin (or plant-based) capsules that encapsulate a liquid, oil or suspension. A brand provides a formula or product concept, and the manufacturer handles formulation support, encapsulation, drying, quality testing, packaging and compliant delivery.

Because softgels seal an active inside a one-piece shell, they are ideal for fat-soluble nutrients and oils that are difficult to deliver in tablets or hard capsules. Learn more about our softgel manufacturing capabilities.

The three main softgel types

Standard gelatin softgels use animal-derived gelatin shells — cost-efficient, with excellent encapsulation and shelf stability. Plant softgels (HPMC) use hydroxypropyl methylcellulose for a vegan, non-animal shell with a strong oxygen barrier that reduces oil oxidation and shelf ‘spotting’. Liquid-filled hard capsules micro-encapsulate actives and seal them in a hard shell, combining the bioavailability of liquids with the stability of capsules.

How softgels are made

Gel preparation → fill preparation → encapsulation → drying → inspection → packaging.

The gelatin or HPMC gel mass and the fill are prepared separately. A rotary die encapsulation machine forms two ribbons of gel, injects the measured fill, and seals the softgel in a single step. Softgels are then dried to the target moisture, inspected, and packaged into bottles, blisters or pouches.

Choosing a softgel manufacturer

Look for relevant certifications (NSF GMP, FDA registration, BRCGS, ISO 22000), the ability to support both gelatin and plant softgels, transparent traceability, in-house R&D for formula development, and the capacity to scale from pilot batches to mass production. Ask about MOQ, lead times and stability testing up front. See our certifications and traceability system.

Frequently asked questions

What products are best suited to softgels?

Fat-soluble nutrients and oils such as omega-3 fish oil, vitamin D3, vitamin E, CoQ10, evening primrose oil and lutein are ideal softgel candidates.

Are vegan softgels available?

Yes. Plant softgels made from HPMC provide a vegan, non-animal alternative with a strong oxygen barrier and clean-label appeal.

What is a typical softgel MOQ?

MOQ depends on the formula and packaging. A reputable manufacturer will support pilot batches through to mass production — ask for a quote based on your target volume.
