GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) for dietary supplements, codified in the US as 21 CFR Part 111, governs the full manufacturing system: qualification and identity testing of incoming ingredients, master and batch production records, in-process controls, equipment cleaning and maintenance, personnel hygiene and training, laboratory controls, specifications and release testing, complaint handling, and recall procedures. One critical clarification, because suppliers' marketing frequently blurs it: FDA registration is not FDA approval. Food facility registration means the factory is registered with the US FDA as required for exporting, making it subject to FDA inspection. It involves no quality evaluation whatsoever. How do BRCGS, FSSC 22000, ISO 22000, and HACCP differ?

What about halal, organic, and other claim-based certifications?

Beyond quality-system certificates sits a second family: certifications that authorize specific label claims. These deserve separate attention because for softgels they interact with the shell material in ways buyers often miss.

Halal is the clearest case. Standard softgel shells are made from gelatin, typically bovine or porcine in the broader industry; porcine gelatin is categorically excluded from halal products, and bovine gelatin qualifies only when certified halal through the slaughter and processing chain. Certificate fraud and — more commonly — certificate overstatement are real risks in overseas sourcing, and verification takes minutes once you know the method:

  1. Get the actual certificates, not logos on a website or brochure. Any legitimate supplier sends PDFs on request.
  2. Check the certified legal entity and address against the factory you are actually buying from. A common trick is presenting a certificate belonging to an affiliate, a parent company, or a different site. The address on the certificate must match the address where your product is made.
  3. Check the scope statement. Certificates specify covered activities and product categories. A certificate scoped to powder blending does not cover softgel encapsulation, even at the same address.
  4. Check validity dates and audit cycle. Expired certificates are void; certificates near expiry warrant asking about the scheduled re-audit.
  5. Verify with the issuing body. NSF, BRCGS, FSSC 22000, and major halal and organic certifiers all maintain online directories of certified sites, and certification bodies answer verification emails. Cross-check every material certificate this way.
  6. Confirm the certification body is accredited (and, for food-safety schemes, that the scheme is the GFSI-benchmarked one being claimed). An unaccredited local body's GMP certificate is close to worthless.

Make verification a standing step in supplier qualification, and repeat it annually — certificates lapse, scopes change, and factories move. Do certifications replace your own testing and audits?

No — they change what your testing and audits are for. With a well-certified supplier, your independent lot testing becomes confirmatory rather than exploratory: periodic third-party checks of potency, heavy metals, and micro on received goods, matched against the manufacturer's CoAs, at a fraction of the intensity you would need with an uncertified source.
